Asgarthan Political System

Overview

The Asgarthan Republic is deliberative in nature, which entails active citizen participation in the political and judicial life of the Peninsula. The political framework is structured around a strict separation of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

Each branch is further divided into several autonomous and complementary organs to prevent any one branch from exerting dominance over the others. This system aims to foster balance and ensure that decisions are made through deliberation, consensus, and adherence to principles of justice and democracy.

Legislative Power

The legislative branch proposes, drafts, and votes on laws. It is divided into three organs:

The Agora

Conveys executive recommendations to citizens and proposes laws regarding issues identified by the executive.

The Quorum

Asgarthan citizens can vote on legislative proposals and strategic decisions. Every five years, a group of citizens is randomly selected to form a Quorum, ensuring minimum voter participation.

The Armarius

Once votes are cast and counted, the ratified laws are drafted by the Armarius, a branch of Ordis. The Armarius refines texts and ensures laws properly integrate into the legal corpus.

Executive Power

The executive power, or Trusted Council, enforces laws passed by the legislative branch and implements decisions of the people. It is divided into three distinct organs:

Monarch

A Basileus / Basilisa is elected for a usual term of ten years and arbitrates Council sessions. In cases of tie votes, they has authority to decide the direction deemed most appropriate.

The Conclave

Gathers representatives from each Faction - the annually elected Archons. These spokespersons advise the Basileus based on their sponsoring organization’s perspective.

The Chancellery

Created as a counterbalance to the Factions. This assembly of politicians and scholars not affiliated with any Faction advises the Basileus in the interest of the people and society at large.

Judicial Power

The judicial power is segmented into two complementary triads: law enforcement and judicial organs.

Law Enforcement

  • The Aegis: Law enforcement force overseen by Ordis, ensuring citizen security
  • The Damocles: Managed by Asterion, counters external Tumult threats and serves as political police
  • The Aspis: Citizen militias composed of volunteers

Justice

  • The Libra: Overseen by Ordis, administers justice throughout the Peninsula
  • The Misericordia: Defense attorneys representing those who violated Asgarthan laws
  • Citizen Juries: Randomly selected citizens responsible for rendering verdicts

Other Organizations

  • The Bravos Fyrds: Assemblies of Companies that can support military forces when needed
  • The Kuninguard: Personal guard of the Basileus, loyal to the office rather than the individual

Current Form

Established in 254 AC as a Deliberative Republic under Morwen Durward, who transformed the Kingdom into a Republic through democratic referendum.
