Hypogea
Overview
Hypogea is a titanic underground cavity that sprawls beneath the Sarkans Desert in Caer Arcolano. The cavity is held in place by an extensive root network and is irrigated by rivers of milky white waters, with roots producing their own bioluminescence. Access to the Hypogea is provided through Kolamusa organisms—living masses resembling a cross between lichen and baobab—whose hollow trunks contain wells that descend into the depths. The ecosystem serves as the primary source of Arcolano Milk, a psychotropic substance that Alterers sometimes use to enhance their demiurgic abilities. From Caecaster, the depths are also accessed by long, thunderous staircases.
Geography and Features
Hypogea is characterized by:
- Underground rivers flowing through the depths
- Streams winding in rivulets over sand
- The unreal silence of the abyss
- Carved passages created by water over time
- Natural cavities and chambers
- Rock walls that sometimes contain embedded creatures
- Damp sand covering many areas
- Oozing rock surfaces
The atmosphere is subdued and soft, with sounds that reverberate, muffle, and spread within the immense underground ecosystem. The environment features refreshing humidity laden with mineral scents, providing a stark contrast to the arid furnace of the desert above Caecaster.
Access
Hypogea is accessed by descending long, thunderous staircases with railings. The descent takes visitors from the carved halls of Caecaster down into the depths where the perpetual night reigns. The chilly air of the underground contrasts dramatically with the perpetual summer heat of the desert surface.
Arcolano Milk Harvesting
The primary economic activity in Hypogea is the harvesting of Arcolano Milk. Harvesters like Nesiwe work in the perpetual night of the depths, collecting this precious substance. The work involves:
- Navigating the underground passages and chambers
- Locating sources of Arcolano Milk
- Extracting the psychotropic substance
- Dealing with the isolation and darkness of the environment
- Muffled chatter among colleagues during work
The harvesters experience the unique sensory environment—the gurgle of streams, the refreshing humidity, the mineral scents, and the movements of air through the passages.
Uncharted Areas
The deeper reaches of Hypogea contain uncharted areas that remain unexplored. When Lindiwe helped the Yzmir hunt for Maw, the search party traveled to these uncharted areas, taking many days to reach the deepest sections where the chimera worm waited.
The Discovery of Maw
It was in Hypogea that Lindiwe, then a blind child, first encountered Maw. Drawn to a murmuring coming from the oozing rock, she discovered the chimera worm embedded in the wall.
