Overview

Section 57 was a military unit of The Aegis assigned to the Expeditionary Corps for subterranean operations in the City of Scholars. The entire section was destroyed in 393 AC during an encounter with The Hunger.

Mission

The section was deployed to descend deep into the City of Scholars and reach the Scholars’ Vault to reestablish contact with the Mesektet. Their mission required traversing the ruined city, the Undergrowth dig sites, and entering The Maze.

Composition

The unit included:

  • A commanding officer who carried scrolls and origami for combat
  • A sergeant
  • A corporal
  • Communications officer Alfie Phillips (service number 2187)
  • Additional soldiers and stragglers

Timeline

Tuesday 12, 393 AC - Deployment

Section 57 departed at dawn after receiving clearance for subterranean deployment gear. They descended by elevator into the Undergrowth, crossed the ruined city, and reached a camp at a former university dig site where Axiom scientists were excavating artifacts. The scientists reported recent attacks by spectral entities that left burn-like wounds.

Wednesday 13, 393 AC - First Attack

The section entered a labyrinthine network of tunnels. After becoming disoriented, the Eidolon Theseus guided them to their campsite among floating carved stones. During the night, spectral clawed hands attacked from corridor walls. The Gestalt malfunctioned. The officer destroyed the specters with origami scrolls, but several soldiers were killed. Survivors experienced memory disturbances.

Thursday 14, 393 AC - Massacre

The section marched toward the Scholars’ Tomb to reach the Mesektet rendezvous. All members experienced severe memory deterioration—headaches, forgotten meals, fading recollections of family members. In triangular passageways, The Hunger dropped a black veil over the unit, blinding them. In the ensuing chaos, soldiers were killed while The Gestalt remained silent. The corporal collapsed. Alfie Phillips fled through a triangular exit.

Friday 15, 393 AC - Final Casualties

Phillips witnessed The Hunger kill the sergeant and officer. The creature swallowed both men whole, then expelled their lifeless bodies and consumed their Sap supply. Phillips evaded the creature and found refuge near the Scholars’ Vault.

Fate

Phillips documented the events in a journal while awaiting rescue by the Mesektet. The journal was later found near the Scholars’ Vault on his body. No survivors from Section 57 were recovered.
