Abelen Sundström
Overview
Abelen Sundström was a Bravos explorer celebrated as the most fearless explorer Asgartha has ever known. Daughter of Bravos messenger Gusta Sundström, she made her fortune through geographic discoveries and used her wealth and fame to launch further expeditions.
Background
Accompanied by her Lyra boatswain Maya Vastag, Abelen discovered an island far off the coast of the Peninsula, which was named Abelena after her. She also found a new passage between Suspira and the capital that winds through the Undersea and connects to Abelena, cutting journey time in half by passing between the reefs. She used her wealth and fame to launch expeditions to the east, where she mapped new shores which she named “Keleti”.
Basileus Avkan ruun-Heshkari cited Abelen Sundström alongside Rifat Asdrubal as explorers whose exploits inspired his childhood dream that eventually became the Rediscovery Endeavor. Grand Admiral Temera Singh expressed deep admiration for Sundström’s courage during a conversation with the Basileus about the Endeavor. The tale of Abelen, Maya, and Kacchena is remembered as a legendary story alongside other famous human-Leviathan relationships such as Niavhe and Kaibara, and Nuur Tamrat and Annoba.
Timeline
271 AC - Sailing the Southern Coast of Caer Oorun
In 271 AC, Abelen was the first to defy the terror of the Kraken by sailing for several weeks along the southern coast of Caer Oorun without encountering the giant squid. More than a hundred years before the launch of the Rediscovery Endeavor, her ship the Stormward paved the way for future explorers. It was by relying on her maps that the Bravos decided to replicate her feat in 327 AC, building Cebir with Ordis support in a frozen area where pack ice and icebergs could serve as natural defenses against the sea monster.
