Sister Mathilde
Overview
Sister Mathilde is an Auxiliary of The Cloister, the Yzmir medical facility. She is credited with first identifying and naming Oblivion, an affliction causing progressive memory loss among explorers of the City of Scholars.
Discovery of Oblivion (393 AC)
Sister Mathilde accompanied an expedition into The Crow’s Eye during the Rediscovery Endeavor. On the second day of descent into the underground labyrinth, the group experienced intense emotions and Chimerae attacks. Near the outer limits of the last mapped levels, a malevolent presence manifested, accompanied by visceral fear. During the retreat, specters with emaciated limbs attacked the group. Several Alterers stood frozen, unable to summon their Eidolons.
Following this expedition, Sister Mathilde conducted a thorough investigation. She consulted expedition reports at Town Square, compiling similar incidents and interviewing affected individuals. Her research identified a pattern: those who ventured deepest into the Crow’s Eye developed progressive memory loss, which she named “the Oblivion.”
Recommendations
Sister Mathilde formally recommended:
- Temporary suspension of all expeditions into the depths
- Full examination of all individuals returning from the City of Scholars
- Relocation of the outpost several hundred meters away to establish a quarantine zone
Contributions to Treatment
Working with Rati surgeons and Cloister healers, Sister Mathilde documented the treatment protocol using memory Grafts—psychic fragments donated by loved ones that serve as patches for afflicted minds.
