The Cloister
Overview
The Cloister is a medical facility within or near The Kadigir, the Yzmir Bastion. It serves as a treatment center for those afflicted by magical conditions, particularly those related to Aether exposure and Tumult singularities. The facility is staffed by healers including Baku and Caladrius.
Purpose and Function
The Cloister specializes in treating cases that involve:
- Magical afflictions caused by Aether exposure
- Conditions related to contact with Tumult singularities
- Remanence and other dangerous magical ailments
- Long-term care and internment for those with unstable conditions
The facility appears to serve as both an acute treatment center and a long-term care facility for Yzmir members and others who have been affected by the dangerous aspects of magical practice.
Physical Layout
The Cloister features:
- Inner courtyard with steps
- Balustrade where visitors sit
- Pathways where Yzmir auxiliaries in red four-pointed star uniforms patrol
- Adjacent to The Kadigir gardens
- Exposed to seasonal weather (winter brings cold, frost, snow)
Nurses carry bags with red star insignia containing vials and compresses for treating Remanence episodes. Medical staff maintain watchful presence, ready to intervene during patient crises.
Treatment of Kumari Adhikari
When young Kumari Adhikari fell into The Well of Tears and ingested water containing large amounts of pure Ether, she was rescued by an Eidolon and immediately taken to the Cloister for treatment.
Healers Baku and Caladrius worked to restore her mental health, but despite their efforts and expertise, they could not fully cure her. Kumari remained subject to visions and bouts of gentle madness, developing Remanence—a dangerous affliction that plunges those affected into trance-like states.
She remained interned within the Cloister at The Kadigir to ensure her condition did not worsen. Over the years, Akesha Adhikari would visit her sister during her rare periods of idleness, maintaining their bond despite the tragedy that had separated them.
Treatment of Oblivion (393 AC)
During the Rediscovery Endeavor, the Cloister became a treatment center for Oblivion, an affliction causing progressive memory loss discovered among explorers of the City of Scholars. Sister Mathilde, an Auxiliary of the Cloister, first identified and documented the condition. Working with Rati surgeons, healers developed a treatment using memory Grafts—psychic fragments donated by loved ones that serve as patches for broken minds. These artificial memories allow patients to function, though inconsistencies occur.
Location Within the Kadigir
The Cloister is situated within or near The Kadigir, allowing it to serve the many Yzmir Initiates who work with dangerous magical forces. Its proximity to The Well of Tears and other Tumult singularities makes it strategically positioned to provide immediate care for those affected by accidents or exposure to these phenomena.
