The Nine Sisters

Overview

The Nine Sisters are Eidolons who serve as tutelary patrons to the Lyra Clans. Each of the nine Sarabands has one of the Nine Sisters as their patroness, functioning as a Muse for their respective Clan.

Relationship with the Matriarchs

Each Matriarch of the nine Sarabands represents an exclusive interlocutor for one of the Nine Sisters. This connection forms the spiritual and organizational foundation of Lyra authority, as The Nine Matriarchs serve as the voices through which the Nine Sisters communicate with their respective Clans.

Connection to Mnemosyne

The Matriarchs are each the voice of a Muse, and each Muse is the patroness of a Lyra Clan. The Nine Sisters are understood to be the daughters of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory and mother of the Muses. Mnemosyne holds authority over the Nine Sisters, making her theoretically capable of imposing her will upon them.

Role in Lyra Governance

The Nine Sisters rarely exercise direct authority over the Lyra. Instead, they prefer to allow The Nine Matriarchs to watch over their processions like shepherds over their flocks. However, when tradition is violated or significant decisions must be made, the Nine Sisters can act through the Matriarchs to enforce their will.

The Kasirga Clan Exile

When the Kasirga Clan elected an Eidolon as their Shepherd, breaking with the tradition that only a mortal could serve in this role, the Nine Sisters responded through the Matriarchs. According to tradition, the role of Shepherd was reserved for a mortal who could become the vessel of the Matriarch’s voice, not an imaginary being.

The Matriarchs declared that if the Kasirga Clan persisted in pursuing this path, it would be banished from the Lyra alliance. When the Clan elders remained steadfast in their decision, the Nine Sisters had no choice but to exile them, a dishonor the Clan had to endure forever.
