Zaratan
Overview
Zaratan is a reptilian Leviathan inhabiting the Rhodopean Quadrant of the Cloud Realm. Classified as low risk by the Expeditionary Corps, Zaratan is docile, curious, and extremely sociable—behavior that contrasts starkly with its Asgarthan counterpart Kacchena.
Physical Appearance
Zaratan resembles a massive sea turtle suspended in the sky, approximately 1,500 meters in diameter. Its skin bears a stone-like, chalky hue. The surface of its shell is covered in lush vegetation that serves as nesting ground for a multitude of birds, making it an ecosystem unto itself. Its appearance allows it to go unnoticed in the heavily vegetated environment of the Rhodopean Quadrant.
Behavior
Despite resembling Kacchena, Zaratan displays contrasting temperament. It shows little mistrust of humans and has encouraged explorers to land upon its shell, positioning itself so ships could easily cast off their moorings. Deep gashes on some of its scales indicate that other Leviathans have targeted it in the past.
Timeline
393 AC - Whiplash Crossing
Zaratan joined a procession of Leviathans led by Halua through The Whiplash, creating a low-Tumult slipstream for the Expeditionary Corps armada. Upon emerging into the cyclone’s eye, Alelo snapped its jaws in defiance at Zaratan before the two parted without conflict.
