Rama Thongsuk
Overview
Rama Thongsuk is an Axiom geologist and humanist philosopher based in Hadera. Known among miners as “the professor,” he combines scientific work with advocacy for workers’ rights. He is the father of Isaree Thongsuk and husband of Meredith.
Background
Rama comes from the wealthy classes of Hadera but maintains deep connections to working people. Described as a dreamy scientist, he is as passionate about minerals as about defending the rights of the weak. He instilled humanist values in his daughter from a young age, offering insights into Asgarthan social issues through science and reason, always tinged with kindness and compassion. He punctuated his explanations with poems and quotations to etch philosophical principles into Isaree’s mind during discussions held in a tea room near her school.
Work at the Enosha Mines
Rama regularly descended into the Enosha Mines ostensibly to collect Aerolith samples. Humble and hard-working, he moved unnoticed among the prospector teams, who appreciated his modesty. He used these visits to help miners draft letters and solve bureaucratic problems, often bringing young Isaree to the mine gates and taverns where workers gathered. His reputation as “the professor” made him a trusted figure among the mining community from drillers to engineers.
The Enosha Strikes
During the 384 AC Enosha Strikes, Rama volunteered immediately to aid rescue efforts after the mine explosion trapped twenty miners. When his daughter joined the strike committee, Rama attempted to mediate between her and Meredith but failed to prevent their estrangement. After Isaree moved into the miners’ guild hall, he secretly aided her efforts, providing advice and meals behind his wife’s back. Following the violent suppression of the strike, Rama cared for his injured daughter and convinced her to flee Hadera for her safety.
He maintained correspondence with Isaree after her exile to Arkaster through the former head of the Lapidaries’ Guild, and his old friend Basem Falani took her on as an apprentice.
