Sundström Route

Overview

The Sundström Route is a maritime channel winding through the Undersea, connecting Suspira to Arkaster. Its inauguration marked a major advancement in Asgarthan maritime trade.

History

For a long time, ships transporting Suspira’s ores to the capital faced difficult journeys. The Southwest Passage through the Shawl was a bottleneck, and the Season of Mists forced boats to bypass Anthea via the Biela, extending journeys by several weeks.

The Undersea was previously considered too impracticable by pilots due to its numerous shallows, persistent mist, and countless wrecks on sharp reefs. However, a navigable route was eventually found and inaugurated as the Sundström Route.

Impact

The route allowed maritime traffic to finally clear up. Ships could drastically reduce their travel time, and the channel enabled capital shipowners to charter much larger tonnage vessels, the famous Mistbreakers.

Stopovers

On this channel, Dusk remains an almost obligatory stopover point, as does the port of Gusta on the Abelena archipelago. Travelers are warned against straying from the established path.
