Kiragata Marshes

The Kiragata Marshes (also known as the Kiragata Wetlands) are a marshland region within Asgartha. The area contains The Fagn, a cursed zone created at the end of the 3rd century AC during The Three Factions War when the Black Leviathan was defeated there.

Original State

Before corruption by the Fagn, the marshes were bucolic. The landscape featured:

  • Shrews darting through tall grass
  • Insects buzzing above tranquil waters of ponds
  • Orange grass as far as the eye could see
  • Pastoral ponds
  • Thorny trees reaching for the sky

The marshes were muddy expanses with a peaceful, natural ecosystem.

The Fagn’s Expansion

The Fagn began as a small island of darkness in the muddy expanses of the marsh. Over the years, it has continued to grow, nibbling away at the ecosystem bit by bit with insatiable greed. Sometimes it spreads forcefully, conquering an entire area in a matter of hours.

Current Corrupted State

Areas recently struck by the dark effluvia of the Fagn undergo dramatic transformation:

  • The land becomes dark, sinister, and misty
  • A foreign shadow falls and embraces the murky undergrowth
  • Gigantic corals spring from the earth, illuminating the area with a reddish glow
  • Strange structures stretch in place of trees, shaped like motionless waves of a petrified swell
  • The smell of carrion lingers in the air
  • Mana floats in the air, torn from things and beings, dancing like will-o’-the-wisps

The landscape becomes so upheaved that it is unrecognizable. Many animals have fled to neighboring ecosystems, while those who didn’t have either perished, devoured by corrupted peat, or been contaminated by the Fagn until they became unrecognizable.

Muna Efforts

The Muna work to combat the expansion of the Fagn and heal the corrupted marshes. Alterers like Teija move through the affected areas:

  • Healing corrupted fauna and flora
  • Collecting Mana droplets floating in the air to redistribute them later
  • Removing parasitic ideas from corrupted creatures
  • Working bit by bit, plot by plot to save what can still be saved

The task is long and tedious, but the Muna continue their efforts to stem the tide of corruption. Bravos reinforcements have come to support the Muna in protecting communities living nearby, and powerful Yzmir have arrived to curb the magical threat looming over these places.

Despite these efforts, the plague is gaining ground, unstoppable and inevitable. The Muna maintain their vigil over the Fagn to prevent its evil from spreading and to cleanse it of its curse.

Geography

The marshes are located near enough to the Katkera that they can be accessed from the region where Teija works. They represent one of the frontline areas where the Muna combat the spreading darkness of the Fagn.
