Kuningas
Overview
Kuningas is the title for the High King of Asgartha, first held by Rune after the Phoenix crowned him during the founding moment in Year 1 AC. The feminine equivalent is Kuningatar (High Queen).
Establishment
The title was established when Rune became the first sovereign of Asgartha, crowned by divine selection rather than conquest or election. The Phoenix’s choice of Rune—placing a crown of fire upon his brow that left an indelible mark—established the Kuningas as a leader with mystical legitimacy.
Powers and Responsibilities
The Kuningas holds executive authority over the nation, serving as commander of military forces, arbiter of disputes, and guardian against threats. However, the title was never intended to be absolute—Rune established The Trusted Council specifically to advise and challenge the Kuningas’s decisions.
Succession
Cwaith became the first Kuningatar in 42 AC, succeeding Rune and establishing that the title could pass to capable leaders regardless of gender. The line continued through several rulers until 130 AC, when the reign of Ekaterina ruun-Caellach ended and the political system transitioned to the Council of Archons (130-194 AC). Later periods saw the title replaced by “Basileus” (masculine) and “Basilissa” (feminine).
