Bark Refuge
Overview
The Bark Refuge is a sanctuary built within the heart of The Spindle, the world tree located in the Katkera. It serves as the seat of the Spindle and is considered the most important of the nine elemental Refuges maintained by the Muna.
Location and Structure
The Refuge is constructed within the massive trunk of The Spindle, utilizing the natural cavity and ecosystem of the world tree. Its entrance opens like a gaping maw, though it appears tiny compared to the immense circumference of the trunk.
The interior features an inner clearing surrounded by moss-covered standing stones, creating a natural ceremonial space. Braziers and lanterns can be positioned around this clearing for rituals.
Ceremonial Functions
Musubi Ceremonies
The Bark Refuge is the exclusive location where The Musubi bonding ceremonies are performed. Only the Muna can celebrate this ceremony. All Alterers and Chimerae who wish to bond are invited to the Bark Refuge so that a Muna priest can intertwine their essences.
The Musubi is not only reserved for Alterers and entities of The Tumult—two individuals can unite for many reasons, whether love, friendship, or mutual interest. A Muna Ollam (venerable priest) officiates these ceremonies.
Initiation Completion
The Bark Refuge is where the ceremony takes place to officially integrate aspirants into the Muna faction. After completing the Nine-Stage Pilgrimage and climbing The Spindle to collect materials, initiates return to the Bark Refuge to weave their Namkha Knot under the canopy of the world tree.
Priesthood
The Refuge is maintained by priestesses and priests of the Spindle who perform various ceremonial duties:
- Lighting lanterns and oil lamps with camphor and aromatic herbs (jasmine, sage, magnolia, lavender)
- Bringing baskets of fruits and flowers
- Performing ritual preparations and body paintings
- Officiating bonding ceremonies
Elemental Affiliation
As one of the nine Refuges, the Bark Refuge is affiliated with the Bark element, representing the living wood and growth aspect of nature’s cycle. It serves as a stage within the pilgrimage circuit that connects all Refuges together.
