The Skein
Overview
The Skein is the underlying Mana network that binds all living beings and life forms across reality. Perceived naturally by the Muna, it functions as both a communication medium and an ecological sensing apparatus, allowing those attuned to it to detect disturbances, transmit emotions, and commune with other species. The Skein forms the philosophical and practical foundation of the Muna Faction, shaping their understanding of identity, interconnection, and their role as stewards of natural balance.
Nature and Function
The Skein manifests as dendrite-like filaments of Mana energy extending between all sentient beings. The Muna understand it not as a divine entity but as an intrinsic dimension of reality — a shared substrate linking every living thing into a continuously shifting whole. Under this view, no individual exists in isolation; identity emerges from one’s position within the network and the interactions maintained with the surrounding ecosystem.
The scholar Ascanios Fenn’s Codex Linificus offers a theoretical framework describing the Skein as a Mana network that connects ideas together. Each idea can be decomposed into component ideas linked through the Skein, which shapes them into composite concepts forming things and individuals. This raises the question of whether entities might also be connected on a macroscopic scale — something the Muna affirm through direct experience. The relationship between the Skein and the Ordis Gestalt has been compared to the difference between the soul and the spirit, though this comparison remains opaque even to those who invoke it.
Perception and Affinities
The Muna perceive the Skein on multiple levels. Consciously, they can transmit signals across great distances to warn peers of dangers or environmental destabilizations, in a manner analogous to mycelial networks. Emotional states also travel along the Skein — when one connected individual experiences intense grief or anger, others attuned to the network feel those sensations as visceral impressions that linger and cling. At a deeper, instinctive level, the Skein can draw a Muna toward a specific location without conscious understanding of why, as though the network itself exerts a guiding influence.
Individual Muna develop distinct affinities through the Skein. Among Niavhe’s original nine disciples, Eru was uniquely attuned to animal communication, while others like Sewit communed most readily with The Spindle and Kiyiya excelled at manipulating fire. The Skein also serves as raw material for the Muna practice of Alteration through The Anam: when weaving an entity into existence, a Muna draws ideas from everything in the surrounding environment through the Skein’s filaments, incorporating experiences and memories from nearby living beings into the creation.
Awakening
The Skein first became accessible to humanity when Niavhe, a young girl on the Asgarthan peninsula, formed an unprecedented bond with the Leviathan Kaibara. The resulting discharge of Mana energy rippled across Asgartha, awakening latent sensitivity to the network in individuals scattered throughout the peninsula. Those who felt the awakening became aware of each other’s existence through the Skein, forming the nucleus of what would become the Muna Faction. No one fully understands why the Skein awakens in some individuals and not others — Niavhe herself compared it to seeds requiring the right conditions to bloom.
The awakening took years to mature. The first generation born with this extrasensory faculty experienced the Skein as simply another sense, finding it difficult to comprehend that others could not perceive it. Niavhe recognized the need to transmit her understanding, selecting nine disciples — including Eru — to live ascetic lives dedicated to nurturing the Skein’s development within the growing Muna community.
The Spindle
At The Spindle, a world tree deep within the Katkera forest, the Skein’s filaments converge into a concentrated node of pulsating energy. When Muna access the network, they can perceive this gathering of power, which functions as the ecological heart of the forest — the point through which all living things within the Katkera are connected. Niavhe and her nine disciples were granted permission by Kaibara to enter and dwell within the Katkera, establishing the Bark Refuge at the Spindle’s base as the spiritual center of the Faction.
Relationship to the Musubi
The Musubi is an extension of the Skein — a ceremony through which two beings are permanently joined by intertwining their spiritual threads with Mana. During the ritual, a Muna officiant weaves the participants’ essences together through the Skein’s filaments, creating a single shared consciousness divided between two physical bodies. The bonded pair can perceive through each other’s senses and communicate beyond language. The Musubi is understood to replicate the original bond between Niavhe and Kaibara, though it took centuries before anyone succeeded in reproducing the phenomenon.
Guardianship
The Muna maintain constant vigilance over the Skein, monitoring its fluctuations for signs of ecological imbalance. Through the network, they can detect when ecosystems are destabilized — whether by The Tumult, invasive species proliferation, or other disruptions — and intervene accordingly. As the Rediscovery Endeavor extends humanity’s reach beyond Asgartha, the Muna aspire to connect newly discovered biomes to the Skein, expanding their perceptual range into territories previously beyond their awareness.
