The Skein

Overview

The Skein is the fabric of Mana that permeates and connects all things in Creation. It is a network, a strong bond that unites all living beings into a protean and shifting whole, serving as the foundation of Muna philosophy and practice.

Nature and Function

The Skein exists as dendrites of Mana energy that interconnect all sentient beings and life forms. For the Muna, it represents the reflection of a collective soul to which all sentient beings are connected. The Skein is not regarded as a deity seeking worship, but rather as an intrinsic aspect of reality itself.

Perception by the Muna

The Muna naturally perceive the Skein on multiple levels:

Conscious Level: Fully conscious, the Muna can send signals to their peers to inform them of dangers or destabilizations even leagues away, functioning akin to a network of mycelium.

Instinctive Level: The connection to the Skein grants the Muna an animal-like instinct. They may feel called to specific places without knowing why, as if the Skein had a will of its own.

The Founding Event

The Skein became accessible to humanity through a fortuitous event when Niavhe, a young girl, formed a bond with Kaibara, the Leviathan who made the peninsula its territory. This union caused a discharge in the Mana fabric, the Skein, which touched many individuals throughout Asgartha. All those affected awakened to this network and became aware of the existence of others like them, forming the first Muna.

The Spindle Connection

At The Spindle, a world tree in the Katkera, the dendrites of the Mana network gather to create a pulsating node of energy. When the Muna access the Skein, they can see this concentration of power, making the Spindle the literal heart of the forest where all beings living there are connected.

Current Objectives

The Muna serve as vigilant sentinels of the Skein, striving to capture all its subtle variations. Through this connection, they can sense when an imbalance is emerging within reality. They stand ready to intervene when an ecosystem is threatened by The Tumult or the excessive proliferation of invasive species.

With time and the rediscovery of the world, the Muna hope to expand their awareness to new horizons, connecting new biomes to the Skein and spreading their perception far beyond current limits.
