Winter Folk
Overview
Winter Folk is the collective term for endemic arctic wildlife at Storhvit exhibiting pseudo-societal consciousness and interspecies social hierarchy. The term was coined by Saskia Averina, Muna Naturalist, in a field journal entry dated January 29, 393 AC. Following Kuraokami’s liberation in May 393 AC, Winter Folk protection became a central priority in the governance of Caer Nilam Province, with Jack Frost selected as replacement patronage to maintain the arctic climate.
Behavioral Characteristics
In human presence, predators at Storhvit defend species that would typically be their prey against intrusion, forming an interspecies cooperative response. A normal system of predation exists within the ecosystem — snow leopards prey on puffins and penguins, orcas hunt seals, guillemots dive after Ice Shrimp — but wildlife unites when humans approach. Polar bears and snowy owls assume protector roles, while penguins and pinnipeds cooperate to assist one another.
The vast majority of Storvhit’s endemic fauna feed on abandoned Mana Moths chrysalides, absorbing pheromones that cause Belisenki to perceive them as moths deserving of protection. This biological mechanism provides Winter Folk species with guardianship from the Belisenki, linking the interspecies cooperation to the broader Mana Moths–Belisenki symbiosis.
Species Composition
Documented conventional species include walruses, narwhals, polar bears, arctic foxes, reindeer, caribou, snow leopards, puffins, penguins, orcas, seals, and guillemots. Endemic or hybrid species documented alongside conventional fauna include Magpengs (magpie-penguin hybrids), Ice Shrimp (shrimp capable of both flight and swimming via an Aerolith vein beneath their carapace), Hakupopo (sentient fluffy spheres that drift with snowfall), and Living Snowman (a sentient Chimera resembling a small animate snowman).
Origin Theories
Two theories exist regarding the presence of arctic fauna at Storvhit. Old legends suggest these animals were once confined to the edges of the globe, which would place Asgartha near arctic regions. An alternative theory posits that, like Tumult Nomads, the fauna migrated following the idea of winter and eventually settled permanently.
Timeline
January 29, 393 AC — Winter Folk Documented
Saskia Averina documented the phenomenon in a field journal entry, recording interspecies cooperative behavior and coining the term “Winter Folk.” Muna and Axiom naturalists were deployed to study the fauna and flora of the Storhvit region.
May 393 AC — Climate Crisis and Governance
Following Kuraokami’s liberation from The Nilam, temperatures at Storhvit rose with snow, glaciers, and ice caps melting. The Expeditionary Corps prioritized safeguarding the Winter Folk, and Jack Frost was selected as replacement patronage to maintain the arctic climate. Temporary governance of the region (designated Caer Nilam Province) was granted to Ordis with Yzmir support, with Winter Folk protection a key consideration in governance arrangements.
