Kuraokami

Overview

Kuraokami is a primordial dragon Oneiros embodying the concepts of rain and snow. He was imprisoned within The Nilam, a dead world-tree at Cais Adarra, for approximately ninety years (~303–393 AC) by the Chrysanthemum Cloaked Warlock. His presence transformed the surrounding region into a perpetually frozen expanse, creating the artificial arctic climate of Storhvit. He was liberated by Exalts in May 393 AC.

Physical Description

Kuraokami manifests as a white dragon with a serpentine form, pearly eyes, and gleaming enamel-like scales. His mane drifts as though on a breeze, and cerulean mists shimmer around his eyes. He moves fluidly and silently, creating an iridescent shimmer when in motion, and can manifest as white light or a ribbon-like form in the sky.

Imprisonment

The Chrysanthemum Cloaked Warlock summoned Kuraokami’s Eidolon to an already-dead world-tree at Cais Adarra around 303 AC, ostensibly to regenerate it. He then used what Kuraokami described as “unholy artifice” to trap the dragon within the trunk, turning its bark into prison walls. The method completely excised Kuraokami from the collective unconscious, preventing him from manifesting as an Eidolon — a technique with only one known parallel, the Mirror anomaly that had similarly trapped an Oneiros.

The Warlock constructed a triple-walled containment system. The first wall was The Nilam’s fossilized bark as physical prison. The second was engineered glaciation using Kuraokami’s siphoned essence, which transformed Cais Adarra from a mild climate to a polar wasteland, forcing the abandonment of a pre-existing human settlement. The third was the Belisenki, a moth-like species created by the Warlock as guardians suited to cold and driven to repel outsiders.

During his imprisonment, Kuraokami’s rage caused persistent environmental effects including earthquakes, sky rumbles, cold currents seeping from the tree, frozen streams spiraling around the trunk, and white lightning through the branches. He was able to project his voice beyond the prison, manifesting as whispers, ground-shaking roars, or an almost tangible presence — a phenomenon early explorers called “The Snow Wraith” before identifying its source.

The 305 AC Tsunami

Two years after imprisonment, the Warlock siphoned Kuraokami’s essence and weaponized it to create a devastating tsunami that struck Arkaster. The attack killed Basileus Itzamna ruun-Heeren, thousands of civilians, and much of the government. Aroro Niski sacrificed herself defending the capital.

Liberation

Fen, granddaughter of the previous Shepherd of The Ouroboros, first established communication with Kuraokami using her Wind affinity, confirming his identity as an imprisoned Oneiros. This discovery created an ethical dilemma for Temera Singh: The Covenant’s First Law required protection of all life (including the Belisenki ecosystem dependent on the cold), while The Concord obligated aid to the Oneiroi, who viewed the imprisonment of one of their own as anathema.

In May 393 AC, multiple Exalts launched a synchronized assault on The Nilam: Atsadi, Sierra, Rin, Gulrang Oduro, Crowbar, Afanas Korovinovich, and Sigismar Synd. Kuraokami hammered from within while the Exalts attacked from outside, redirecting the power of a Tumult hurricane against the prison. Sigismar Synd delivered the final strike with a kelonic spear through transmuted Wingspan, shattering the trunk. Kuraokami streaked skyward, and when he rose high, his roar alone scattered the clouds gathered over Storhvit, causing gray skies to give way to permanent blue.

Post-Liberation

Immediately after liberation, Afanas Korovinovich summoned Kuraokami as an Eidolon. The dragon appeared initially furious before recognizing Afanas as the “bearer of my essence” who had survived channeling his power. Kuraokami confirmed the details of his imprisonment, revealed the tree was already dead when he arrived, explained the triple-walled prison, and confirmed the 305 AC tsunami. He warned Afanas: “Your enemy is sly and treacherous. Unlike you, I am eternal. This imprisonment is but a brief interlude in my existence. For you, it may be a living hell if you are caught.”

Kuraokami’s departure caused temperatures across Storhvit to rise, with snow, glaciers, and ice caps melting at an alarming rate — revealing the climate had been entirely artificial. Jack Frost was subsequently selected as replacement tutelary Oneiros to sustain the arctic ecosystem, and the region was designated Caer Nilam Province.
