The Spheres
Overview
The Spheres are five complementary disciplines of Alteration that comprise The Naali, the Yzmir style of magic. Each Sphere represents a distinct approach to channeling and manipulating Aether.
The Five Spheres
1. Eidomancy
Eidomancy is the invocation of ideas using Effigies. This Sphere focuses on manifesting and embodying concepts through physical representations.
2. Horomancy
Horomancy is divination through the study of idea currents present in the world via Irises. This Sphere allows practitioners to perceive and interpret the flow of ideas across reality.
3. Phonomancy
Phonomancy is the manipulation of ideas through voice and sound, using techniques called the Psalms. This Sphere harnesses the power of spoken and sung words to shape reality.
4. Kinemancy
Kinemancy is the mastery of primal and elemental forces through gesture, employing movements called the Signs. This Sphere channels power through physical motion and symbolic gestures.
5. Gephyromancy
Gephyromancy is the magic of idea transfers and reinforcement through Sigils. This Sphere focuses on creating bridges and connections between concepts.
Schools and Temples
The Yzmir distinguish themselves by their sectorization into Schools of Alteration. Each School has a Temple within The Kadigir that serves as a learning place for Initiates, hosting a wide range of teachers and disciples.
At the head of each School sits a Magister, a prominent representative of the magical discipline over which they preside. These five Magisters sit on The Magisterium, the High Council that guides the entire Faction.
Practitioner Approaches
While there are Alterers capable of mastering all five Spheres, others prefer different approaches:
Specialists: Focus on one domain to develop a single primary expertise Generalists: Practice two or three disciplines simultaneously Masters: Rare individuals who achieve competency across all five paths
Most commonly, Alterers practice two or three disciplines, as it is challenging to devote oneself to the study of all these fields simultaneously.
Purpose and Philosophy
The division into five Spheres allows the Yzmir to systematically explore and master all aspects of Aether manipulation. Each Sphere provides a different lens through which to understand and interact with the fabric of ideas that underlies reality.
