The Sanctum
Overview
The Sanctum occupies the upper section of The Monolith, the Ordis Bastion. It is a labyrinthine library housing the collected knowledge of Asgartha.
Structure
The Sanctum is a ziggurat of tiers and intertwined platforms, connected by corridors, secret passages, stairs, air vents, and alcoves. Thousands of shelves line the walls from floor to ceiling, containing books, grimoires, scrolls, and compilations. A cohort of archivists maintains and classifies these materials.
Functional Areas
Scriptoria: Scribes record new discoveries and accounts on paper or parchment.
Consultation Halls: Vaulted halls with benches where visitors peruse requested works. Librarians assist in locating specific materials through registers and indexes.
Archives: Vertical storage sections requiring constant maintenance as archivists access books at various heights.
Technology
The Axiom have installed Kelon-powered presses in isolated rooms to assist scribes. Kelon lanterns are replacing candles. A mobile mirror complex redistributes external light to dark areas, adjusting position throughout the day. Small automatons ascend and descend shelves, allowing archivists to access high-perched books without ladders.
Research
Ordis historians and philosophers study past events and trends to understand how conflicts arose, seeking to avoid repeating mistakes and investigate the cause of The Confluence.
