Overview

Gulrang Oduro (also known as Gul), born 354 AC, is an Ordis Exalt and Alterer who serves as a captain in The Aegis. She is bonded with her Alter Ego Tocsin, a sentient Golem Chimera, through The Musubi ceremony. Gulrang is the older sister of Kojo Oduro, the Slayer of The Kraken.

Background

Gulrang comes from a working family in Arkaster—her mother Tehea is a skilled woodworker from the Wood Guild specializing in ebony, and her father Yawo owns a small grocery store. As a child, Gulrang would accompany her mother to the factory and rush to the window when Aegis sentinels departed on patrol. Venka, a veteran injured fighting The Tumult, visited for dinner and told anecdotes about service. At twelve, Gulrang decided to become an Aegis sentinel. By fourteen, when Kojo was barely two, she heard about the Expeditionary Corps from street criers. She convinced her parents to let her join by promising to take care of the house and Kojo for four years. Venka began training her—rising at dawn, preparing breakfast, escorting Kojo to school, attending classes, managing meals, and training for the Ordis armed forces. She increased muscle mass, trained in weapon handling, studied laws, and learned Heka Glyphs.

Gulrang’s progression within the Ordis hierarchy was rapid—from cadet to recruit in months, then official Trooper in two years. She was marked with the Faction’s Diamond, opening her to the Hive Mind. During a Tumult surge at The Rampart, two Chimeras materialized—one infused into a stone statue (Golem) and another took the form of a griffin. A rock block hurtled toward Gulrang, but the animated statue raised its arm to protect her. The griffin pounced on the Golem, and Gulrang used Heka to create marble spikes that pierced the griffin’s flank. The Golem was captured, and Gulrang visited it in its cell. Using Heka Glyphs, they initiated conversation. After weeks of dialogue, Gulrang brought it a trumpet, and the Chimera produced cacophonous notes—she gave it the name Tocsin.

Gulrang and Tocsin underwent The Musubi ceremony and bonded as Alter Egos. Through the Hive Mind, others could converse with Tocsin. When she introduced Tocsin to her family, she discovered Kojo had also taken in a Chimera.

382 AC - Aedyt’s Singularity Rescue

Gulrang watched recruit Aedyt struggle in training until Tumult Singularity formed at Kurung, and Aedyt threw herself into winds to save Alterer.

386 AC - Teamwork Training at Monolith

Three Exalt duos (Gulrang/Tocsin, Sigismar/Wingspan, Waru/Mack) were chosen by four Ordis branch representatives: Kakoba, Frog Prince, Cestimir, Nassefa.

387 AC - Learning Glyphs from Baxsan

Baxsan taught Gulrang new Glyphs including “Shackle,” “Darkness,” “Passage,” and others, then moved to practical dueling creating insulating suit.

389 AC - Waiting at Council Chamber

Gulrang encountered Maibritt, Templar guard with gold chain and three sealed scrolls, standing before closed Council Chamber door during negotiations.

391 AC - Recruit Assessment

Gulrang assessed ranks of new recruits during inspection attended by Admiral Temera Singh, Commodore Jin-Hee Jeanty, and Sigismar Synd, evaluating Sunisa, Amenisa, and Osoyo as officer material while other instructors placed bets on top performers.

392 AC - Opening Solstice Gate

Heavy doors of Solstice Gate opened and Tocsin blew powerful horn note, then Gulrang called Coalescence connecting to all recruits she trained.

392 AC, September - Battle of Madan Bay

During the Battle of Madan Bay, Tocsin blew horn signaling lancers while Gulrang channeled Glyphs “Coordination,” “Arrangement,” “Harmonization” through conch to coordinate troubadours.

392 AC - Kojo’s Carnelian Crown Ceremony

Gulrang watched Kojo kneel before Avkan ruun-Heshkari who placed Carnelian Crown on his head, and teased him afterward about his recklessness.

392 AC - Building Telamon Beacons

Gulrang protected Telamon architects using Alteration to summon Eidolons as workers building beacon towers to connect her Rhombus to Gestalt.

392 AC - Mesektet Recovery Expedition

Gulrang led Ordis expedition through Irundu forest to locate crashed Mesektet, discovering wreckage on mountainside while Nosk broadcast through Gestalt.

393 AC, February - Belisenki Night Assault at Storvhit

Gulrang commanded Ordis forces during Belisenki night assault on convoy traveling toward Storhvit, coordinating through The Gestalt while deploying shield walls and interception teams against approximately 40 attackers from the northern sector. During combat, she witnessed a Belisenka use minor Alteration to create jagged ice spikes, and responded with Heka symbols solidifying snow into marble columns. Akesha Adhikari arrived through portal bearing Mana Moths chrysalides; after soldiers consumed the chrysalides, the Belisenki ceased attacking and departed, no longer perceiving expedition members as intruders due to absorbed pheromones.

Gulrang attended briefing at rocky foothills marking the tundra’s edge, where an NCO commander announced reinforcements and assigned Gulrang’s unit to the advance guard.

393 AC, January-March - Belisenki Defense at Tundra Foothills

Gulrang led shield defense during all-night Belisenki assault, filling gaps in formation as troops fell while Tocsin used horn blasts to repel attackers; reinforcements arrived at dawn from the western ridge.

Gulrang received supplies from an Aerolith-powered floating mobile armory on the ice pack, inventorying medical supplies, cold-weather equipment, climbing kits, and autocrawlers while loading troops’ letters to families for return transport.

After The Gestalt ordered rapid reinforcement of eastern contingents, Gulrang traced Glyphs in snow to summon Benzaiten, whose giant serpent mounts transported the entire squadron across treacherous tundra terrain.

393 AC, January-March - Rallying Call at Earthen Fort

Gulrang stood beside Tocsin at an earthen fort grown using Alteration as the Golem sounded the great horn and recited rallying verses to approximately 50 soldiers before Belisenki assault approached through the mist.

393 AC, June-September - Receiving Kaaba at Crow’s Eye

Gulrang prepared troops to break camp at The Crow’s Eye when Templar Kaaba arrived as expedition leader.

393 AC, June-September - Mesektet Escape and Mass Healing

Gulrang piloted Mesektet out of The Crow’s Eye after an attack that left her with memory loss, then summoned Simurgh above The Screed to heal over 200 soldiers in critical condition.

393 AC, June-September - Maintaining Mesektet Through Alteration

Gulrang used Alteration to maintain Mesektet’s appearance as a functional headquarters, simulating engine rooms and facilities while Tocsin channeled Mana from distant sources—an assignment Kaaba gave to sideline her from frontline operations.

Abilities

Gulrang is skilled in Heka Alteration, able to inscribe Glyphs into stone to create marble spikes, protective barriers, and constructs. She can channel multiple Glyphs simultaneously through instruments such as a conch for battlefield coordination. She rose from cadet to captain in The Aegis through her own merit.
